The Egyptian Cotton Industry: Growth Through Private Investment

Cairo, Egypt, 15 May, 2004

Documents of the Meeting
Agenda (9K PDF)

During the last 10 years, the Government of Egypt has actively promoted the liberalisation and privatisation of the Egyptian cotton industry. Cotton prices now reflect world market prices, the private sector plays an important role in marketing of cotton, both internally and for export, and many public sector gins and spinning and weaving mills have been privatised, while the private sector has established additional processing facilities.

As a result of these activities, the Egyptian cotton industry has become more competitive and Egyptian cotton has regained much of its world market share.

In October 2002, the theme of the ICAC 61st Plenary Meeting, held in Cairo, was “Cotton Industry: Growth Through Private Investment.” As a follow-on to this meeting, and to further assist the growth of the Egyptian cotton industry, a conference supported by ICAC will be held in The Cairo Marriott Hotel on 15 May 2004 with the theme “The Egyptian Cotton Industry: Growth Through Private Investment”.

The objective of the conference is to:

  • Attract the attention of local and international businesses to investment opportunities in the Egyptian textile industry, and

  • Encourage the Government of Egypt to facilitate investments

The conference will be a forum where decision level representatives from the government and the public and private sectors can meet and discuss what is required to ensure that the Egyptian textile industry can further develop and increase its share of world cotton markets.

Keynote addresses will be given by Ministers of the Government of Egypt, while additional presentations will be given by existing and potential local and international investors in the Egyptian textile industry. Time will be allowed for discussion after the presentations.

The conference will be extremely focused on investment and development of the textile sector. For this reason, the number of participants will be limited and allocated on a first-come first-served basis.

The primary conference language will be English.
