FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Date Posted: October 31, 2025

Washington, DC — As outlined in detail in the October 2025 edition of “Cotton: Review of the World Situation,” the Latin American cotton industry has been making great strides in recent years. Brazil’s high yields have helped it become the world’s biggest exporter of cotton fiber, Argentina is demonstrating progress in sustainability, and Paraguay has been making steady improvements in cotton cultivation for the last decade.

Each of these issues is addressed in the current issue of the Review, which is a free publication:

  1. Silmara S. Ferraresi, Abrapa’s Director of Institutional Relations, authored the opening article, which highlights the country’s traceability initiative, Sistema Abrapa de Identificação (SAI); its sustainability program, Responsible Brazilian Cotton (Algodão Brasileiro Responsável (ABR)); and the SouABR Program, which addresses cotton promotion and traceability.
  2. Algodón Responsable Argentino’s Alejandro Clot and Tomas Mata provide an overview of Argentine Responsible Cotton (ARA)’s national experiences in sustainability and territorial development, which brings together producers, ginners, the textile industry, and public and private institutions to improve sustainability, traceability, and value addition.
  3. Lorena Ruiz, ICAC Economist and editor of the Review, co-authored the third article with Oliver Wiebe from the Chortitzer Cooperative. It discusses how, after hitting a historic low of just 4,160 tonnes of lint in 2020, cotton production in Paraguay has recorded several consecutive seasons of sustained growth.
  4. The fourth article highlights Fundación IdeaAgro (IDEAGRO Foundation), which was established in 2021 by agreement of the Chortitzer, Fernheim and Neuland cooperatives to coordinate applied research, technology transfer, and laboratory services in Chaco.
  5. The issue closes with a contribution from HM Semillas on the quality, local adaptability, and traceability of its seeds used in the Paraguayan Chaco.
